Work and Travel 2027 timeline: your month-by-month roadmap

Here's the short version of the Work and Travel 2027 timeline: pre-registration for the 2027 season is open as of September 2026, and fall is the most productive time to apply. In a typical season, enrollment and eligibility checks run from September to November, job interviews from November to February, DS-2019 and visa prep from February to April, and visa interviews from March to May. You fly out in June, once your final exams are done.

Your journey starts with a free consultation. We review your student status, your English level and your university's break dates together. If you haven't looked at the requirements yet, our Work and Travel requirements page is a great place to start.

Once your eligibility is confirmed, we complete your sponsor enrollment and you get ready for the English pre-interview. In the same period, you check your passport's validity and start gathering your English-language student certificate, transcript and CV. To plan your budget from day one, we also go over the Work and Travel cost items with you at this stage.

This is the heart of the season. Sponsors connect employers and students through online matching platforms, video interviews and job fairs, and with some sponsors, the first interviews start as early as October. You apply for the positions that catch your eye, from hotels to theme parks, and take short interviews in English.

For students from Türkiye, the job offer is the key to the visa process: no DS-2019 is issued without an approved job offer. Sponsors' summer enrollment deadlines also mostly fall in the winter months, in some cases as early as the beginning of February. Once your sponsor approves your job offer, your DS-2019 (your program's Certificate of Eligibility) is issued. As soon as it arrives, two steps follow in quick succession: paying the SEVIS fee online ($35 for Work and Travel) and filling out the DS-160 visa application form.

It's important that the information on your DS-160 matches your passport and DS-2019 exactly; we check the form with you. We explain every document and payment in our J-1 visa guide. Fees are as of September 2026 and may change.

After completing the DS-160, you pay the visa application fee ($185, as of September 2026, subject to change) and book an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara or the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul. Spring is a busy season for visa applications, so we recommend moving to the appointment step as soon as your DS-2019 arrives.

The interview is short and in English: you'll be asked why you're joining the program and about your school, your job and your plans to return to Türkiye. Once your visa is approved, you book your flight and join our pre-departure orientation. Together we cover travel day, your first week after arrival, housing, your SSN application, workplace culture and who to contact when you need help.

When planning your flight date, you only need to know two rules: you can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date on your DS-2019, and you can't start work before that date. Students from Türkiye usually fly out in June, once their final exams are over.

Your final pre-flight check

• Your passport with your visa, and your DS-2019
• Your job offer and your employer's contact details
• Your health insurance documents and your sponsor's emergency helpline
• Your housing address and your arrival-day transportation plan
• Enough pocket money to last until your first paycheck

When you arrive in America, you check in with your sponsor, apply for your SSN within a few business days and start work. When your job ends, you can travel for up to 30 days; that time is for exploring, not working. You plan your return flight around the start of your university's fall semester and head home to Türkiye before classes begin.

Everyone's timeline is a little different. These are the main factors that shape your personal plan:

• Your university's break dates: the dates of your finals, make-up exams and the start of the fall semester set the limits of your program. You can work for up to 4 months, within your break.
• Visa appointment demand: appointments can fill up quickly in spring, so acting as soon as your DS-2019 arrives saves time.
• Your employer's start date: some employers want you to start in late May, others in mid-June; compare the dates in your offer with your break.
• Sponsor deadlines: every sponsor has its own enrollment calendar, and enrolling early is the safest route.
• Passport and documents: a single missing document can push back your whole timeline, so check your passport's validity when you enroll.

If you made your decision in the winter, you may still have a chance; you just need to move faster and stay focused. Since the Work and Travel application deadline varies from sponsor to sponsor, here's the plan we recommend for students starting in January or February:

• Week one: have your consultation, complete your enrollment and review the open positions with us.
• Prepare documents in parallel: getting your student certificate, transcript and CV done in the same week lets you jump into job interviews quickly.
• Stay flexible on location: being open to different states makes it easier to find a good fit among the remaining positions.
• Reply to interview invitations quickly: as the season moves on, employers decide fast too; being ready and reachable makes a difference.
