Camp counselor requirements: who can apply for summer 2027?

The camp counselor requirements are clear and within reach: you need to be at least 18 when the program starts, speak English well enough to communicate comfortably with kids, and be able to stay at camp for the whole summer. University students, graduates, teachers, youth workers and people with a specialized skill can all apply; you don't need to be a student.

The minimum age is 18, and you need to have reached it by your program start date. The program's general rules set no upper age limit, although some sponsors apply their own cap (28, for example).

The biggest advantage of this program is that you don't have to be a student: you can apply as a graduate, a working professional or a teacher. Support roles at camp, such as kitchen and maintenance work, fall under Work and Travel, which is for students. If you're a student, you may also want to check the Work and Travel requirements.

What camps look for is English that lets you supervise American children and teens and communicate with them easily. This isn't about academic English; what matters is explaining the rules of a game, giving safety instructions and really listening to a child. Your English is assessed in your sponsor interview, and in most cases no specific test score is required.

Everyday conversation practice and a short self-introduction are the best preparation, and we'll rehearse your interview with you.

Camps want to see that you can take responsibility for kids. That experience doesn't have to be professional: volunteer projects, summer schools, assistant coaching, scouting or private tutoring all count.

Your sponsor collects references from people who know you, such as an employer, teacher, coach or volunteer coordinator. Lining up your references early speeds up the whole process.

Camp contracts are usually around 9 weeks and can run 8–11 weeks depending on the sponsor. Because staff training happens before campers arrive, camps generally expect counselors in the first half of June, and some sponsors require you to be able to travel by mid- or late June at the latest. The season ends in mid- to late August.

American camps put child safety above everything else, so a clean criminal record check is part of your application. Sponsors also ask you to complete a health history form, and if you have a pre-existing condition, they may ask your doctor for more information. Certifications aren't required, but they strengthen your profile: first aid, lifeguarding, swim instructor or coaching certificates help you stand out for specialist counselor positions.

2. Make your skills concrete: instead of "I like sports," write "I played on my high school volleyball team for 3 years."
3. Choose strong references: go for people who have seen you working with kids.
4. Record a genuine intro video: short, friendly and energetic; just be yourself.
5. Stay flexible: be open to different types of camps.
